A group of scientists had an exciting finding in the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden(热带植物园). They found 16 new kinds of spiders. What got everyone’s attention was how these spiders were named in a really special way.
These spiders got their names from the famous songs of Jay Chou. For example, there’s the “Anjing Spider” which was named after the song “Anjing”. Also, other well-known songs like “Daodai(倒带)”, “Longquan(龙拳)”, “Xingqing(星晴)”, “Huahai(花海)”, and “Daoxiang(稻香)” were used to name these spiders.
The main scientist in this research is Professor Mi Xiaoqi from Tongren College. This project started in 2006 by a group led by Researcher Li Shuqiang from the Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences(中国科学院). Professor Mi said that giving names to new species(物种) is usually quite hard because the names in a certain group have to be different. But using the names of Jay Chou’s songs turned out to be an easy and quick way.
This discovery soon became a popular topic on the Internet. Lots of people thought it was really interesting and new. Some even joked that maybe Professor Mi was listening to Jay Chou’s music when he thought of these names. Actually, this isn’t the first time Jay Chou’s fans have shown their love for him in the scientific area. In 2020, a postgraduate(研究生) student named Sun Zhixin named a 500-million-year-old trilobite(三叶虫) “Fantastic Creature(范特西虫)” to honor Jay Chou’s creative and imaginative music.
This story tells us that science can be full of cool ideas and fun. Maybe one day, you’ll also get the chance to make your own special and amazing discoveries and put your mark on the world of science. So, keep looking around and stay curious about the things around you.
